Hello I’m Jo, welcome to Art Star.

It all started in an office with a box of dodgy plastic Christmas decorations and an assortment of broken fairy lights with dead batteries. It didn’t feel much like a celebration.

As a graphic designer, having an ongoing love affair with pattern, colour and craft, I decided to create a range of sustainable paper decorations and colourful, eco friendly paper craft kits that would encourage both adults and kids to enjoy the mindfulness benefits of creativity as well as being a super easy and fun way to decorate their homes.

To spread the paper craft joy, I also run workshops to show people how to make paper decorations using all kinds of leftover paper and different printing techniques, oh and I create collages too! My happy place is anywhere with paper, scissors, glue and tea.

My Hack Pack paper craft kits are made from leftover paper from the printing industry, and for every pack I sell I donate one to a kids’ art club. It’s really important to me that all kids get to experience the joy of making things where there are no right or wrong outcomes! They’re are a kind of freestyle craft kit, so you get to make whatever you want. There are loads of tutorials and ideas on the Hack Pack page of this site to get you started. It’s a bit like super simple origami and is a craft activity that can be enjoyed by both adults and kids (age 7+).

The mental health benefits of crafting have been widely studied, and getting absorbed in the process of making things has been shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. So the gift of a craft kit as a birthday present could be a bigger gift than you might have thought!

Sustainability is hugely important to me, so the kits are printed down the road in South East London which minimises their carbon footprint and also supports a local business. The paper they’re printed on is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council which is considered the ‘gold standard’ designation for wood harvested from forests that are responsibly managed, socially beneficial, environmentally conscious, and economically viable.  The packaging is minimal and is made from the same FSC certified paper. When a star reaches the end of its life it is completely recyclable so nothing is ending up in landfill. I’m also dedicating more and more of my time to creating tutorials for decorations that you can make at home using everyday recycled paper and cardboard.

I donate 10% of my profits to UK foodbanks.
